Classical Scene 18th Century Capriccio
Details:
Medium: Drawing
Artist: Alexander Wust

Unframed Size: 22 x 33 cm
Framed Size: 48.5 x 57 cm
Date: 18th Century
Condition: The drawing is in good condition, with no obvious signs of deterioration. See photos for details.
Frame: The frame is in good condition. See photos for details.
Label: On the back of the original mount is an old inscription of a former owner, “Jean de Bonneguise (or Boureguise), Bishop of Arras,” who died in 1769. The reverse of the drawing also bears the name of the 19th-century American artist and collector Alexander Wust. As the style and technique of the work accord with 18th-century classical capriccios rather than 19th-century production, Wust’s signature is best understood as evidence of former ownership, not authorship. The earlier attribution on the mount, therefore, appears to reflect the drawing’s original provenance rather than a later assumption.
